    Good afternoon Thank you very much for your winch video! I have the same Levmar winch on my boat. Please tell me that the gear that is located on the electric motor shaft should be firmly fixed or is play allowed? For me it moves within 1-1.5 mm. This is fine? Thank you!

    If you position your traps so that rats can't access them from the sides, your odds of getting them will increase. The treadle isn't as sensitive on the sides, and the gap between the lure cup and the side of the trap is smaller than at the front. The trap is more powerful at the front, so it's more likely to be a clean kill. Change your baits frequently to keep rats interested. Jam a piece of dried fruit or beef jerky into the bait cup, so that it's hard for rats to remove with their paws or teeth. Mayo is something that they really like. A good trick is to put some bait on top of the flat piece of the treadle behind where the bait cup is and leave the cup empty. In order to reach the bait, rats have to take greater risks to reach it. Using peanut butter or Nutella as a glue, stick a peanut M&M on top of it. Before you do this, give the rats a sample M&M near the trap. They won't be able to resist getting another one. I hope this ups your kills.

      @@Sandra-bq1ii Yes, I have plenty of experience trapping mice and small rats. It can be difficult to tell mice and small rats apart, so using mousetraps is a good way to reduce the number of rats that reach adulthood. Are you trying to trap wild mice, because you live in the country? That will affect my advice. I trap around my house and buildings, and in forests and grasslands.

    Thanks for the windlass for dummies series :))) I've changed all the gears by new last year (trough a professional) of my pro-1000 and after 6 months of sleep in marina, today the windlass did the same... engine turns but gypsy did not... sound was slightly different this time, it seems like gears wasn't turning as well, just a smooth clean electric motor sound there was... Also there was no back flowing, so 2nd gear works well... I think that 1st gear shifted on the shaft towards the cover, the gear you pulled out @ 0:30... is that possible? there was only nylon bushing while you dismantling, anything else to keep it in right position? if thats the problem I can handle it w'out tear the whole windlas down, if not then I'll call for pro-help because its in a tide place under the chain locker hatch and there's not much to do like the ones are mounted to the open deck...

    Final update. works like a charm. Power out, power in, free fall. Couldn't have figured it out without your video. Thanks again.

  • @MilesSchlichte
    @MilesSchlichte Рік тому

    Second update. Ever time I watch your video I pick up on something else. Just before you took the assembly apart I noticed that you were getting the same approx 30 degrees of motion in either direction that I'm now getting. It was only after you took it apart and the dogs dropped out that you were able to spin it further. I still can't get the nut off but I don't think I need to. The collar is spinning freely and the gear tightens and loosens against the collar as you show it's supposed to. I think I'm good to put everything back together again. Glad I didn't try to force that gear to move more that the 30 degrees it already has.

  • @MilesSchlichte
    @MilesSchlichte Рік тому

    Update, after watching your video a couple more times I did notice that the nut you undid with your fingers is the same as mine. I didn't catch that it was flush inside the collar at first. However, I am unable to remove it either with my fingers or with needlenose pliars. However, after bathing the assembly in WD-40 I was able to rotate the intermediate shaft more than just the "rocking motion" earlier. It still sticks but after about 30 degrees motion now. The bushing on the end of the shaft now spins freely. The assembly has been sitting in wd40 all day. I'm hesitant to apply heat due to the plastic washer and I don't really want to force anything. Or do I just force it and order new bearings. That's kind of how I'm leaning now. Thoughts?

  • @MilesSchlichte
    @MilesSchlichte Рік тому

    Good morning, thanks for the reply. So when I removed the cover plate and exposed the gears I then pulled off the smaller gears by hand which left the motor with no gearing attached. At that point when I operated the up/down switch the motor worked in both directions. After putting the gears back on everything worked. Possibly there was just some surface corrosion preventing the reverse even though everything was well greased with no signs of corrosion or water intrusion. So on face value everything seems ok but I have 2 questions. Easy one first, why does the output shaft that the chain dogs go on have two keyways cut in the shaft? I thought that I had lost the keys when I removed the dogs but I don't see any keys on the schematic that would go in those keyways. Second and more importantly, I'm not sure if the intermediate shaft sleeve and the one way bearing are the same on my unit (2017 Pro Fish) as in your video on an older version. With that assembly in my hands I am able to "rock" the gear back and forth slightly on the shaft so it doesn't seem frozen but it's not free spinning either. I am tempted to place the assembly in my vise and try to work it free as you showed but I wanted to be sure that it is supposed to be able to operate as yours did and that the engineering didn't change. Thoughts?

  • @MilesSchlichte
    @MilesSchlichte Рік тому

    Thanks for your videos. My Profish 100 will power in but when I push the console switch to power down I get nothing. I have disassembled the windlass/dogs side and it seemed fine. With nothing on the shaft the motor spins in the up direction but nothing happens trying the down switch. I'm assuming that since the motor works powering up but not down the problem is in the bearing? Just checking before I tear down the other side. thanks. Miles

    • @fishin4salmon
      @fishin4salmon Рік тому

      Does the motor hum or make any sounds when it is powered on. If not I would first test the reversing solenoid. Check to see if it is powering the out side when you power down . It reverses the polarity to the windless. Test the input also. If you have power both ways It will be a seized intermediate shaft sleeve and one way bearing will be shot. It is in the main housing between the motor and the output shaft.

      Either from a sewer/air pipe sticking out of roof, or a small hole entrance in the exterior of house. They can chew through almost anything except steal & concrete. & they have to chew because their teeth grow like crazy. Wood is like a pretzel to them. They can chew threw plastic drain pipes np. & some of them are extremely intelligent. Flipping traps then eating bait.

    Does anyone know if the one-way bearing is supposed to go to the right or left? It has a counterclockwise arrow on the face but I’m not sure which way it goes in or which way the gear is supposed to turn /not turn

    • @fishin4salmon
      @fishin4salmon 2 роки тому

      It should rotate freely counter clockwise. Lock up clockwise. If you follow the power flow when bringing in the rode the main shaft is rotating clockwise and the second gear will rotate counter clockwise. When you release the power switch the one way bearing will now hold the shaft from rotating back clockwise. INA bearings have the size engraved on the side facing out from the bore hole in other words you should be able to see the numbers when installed.

Btw- I wasn’t paying attention to the direction of the 1816 bearing when I disassembled mine this weekend. The bearing was seized up and seized to the compound gear shaft so I had to pull the bearing out and all.. had to use a small torch and some force to pry it out.. which direction does the bearing need to spin when looking down at the open unit? Thanks for this! A day and a half trying to figure why my Lewmar v700 windlass would "seize up" when trying to let out line. The 2nd compound gear was the answer.. It is seized onto the shaft - both the lower roller sleeve and the lower gear. Would not budge even with using a vise as you described. Found a replacement gear set (needed the gasket and one other gear had some corrosion) for $139 at Mauripro sailing.

If that doesn't work you may have one of 3 issues.The cone shaped portions in the gypsy are worn Part #58 on the parts diagram. It is usually the first to go. Check the tapered areas where the pressure points are. If worn the areas will look brass coloured. Next would be #35 and next would be #28. Here is a link for a manual for your windlass.
